Winemaker Theresa Heredia
When Theresa Heredia arrived in the Gary Farrell cellar in 2012, she brought with her a wealth of experience handcrafting cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. From the beginning, her goal has been to guide the evolution of the Gary Farrell Winery house style, adding her own personal signature while maintaining the portfolio’s hallmark elegance, balance and bright natural acidity.
With some of the top vineyard sites in the Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast at her disposal, her approach is simple: “My goal is to take full advantage of specific site and fruit qualities to capture a pure expression of the vineyard. I want to get to know each block of fruit that we receive in the cellar, then tailor our winemaking techniques to fully capture what that fruit has to offer to craft a balanced, beautiful wine.”
Theresa works closely with our growers to ensure the fruit at harvest time delivers the best that the vintage, vineyard and varietal can offer. Her hands-on perspective has been gleaned from time spent in at Napa’s Joseph Phelps Vineyards and Freestone Vineyards on the Sonoma Coast, where she crafted the first Freestone wine and was named “Winemaker to Watch” by the San Francisco Chronicle.
Her passion for Pinot Noir began in the vineyards of France, where she spent time at Domaine de Montille gaining an authentic Burgundian perspective. Looking back on her post-graduate time at UC Davis, it’s not surprising that the Ph.D. candidate in chemistry was lured away by the call of hands on winemaking.
When not in the cellars of Gary Farrell or roaming through the Russian River Valley vineyard sites where our fruit is grown, Theresa lives in Santa Rosa with her partner where they enjoy all the amazing food, wine, drinks and outdoor activities that Sonoma County has to offer. Some of her favorite activities outside of work include traveling, camping, hiking, swimming, yoga and sipping on super creative cocktails.
