About Our Vineyards Our founder Gary Farrell was a passionate believer in great vineyards. Long before the Russian River Valley made its mark on the world stage, Gary was out exploring vineyards in the early 1980s to identify grapes from the most promising sites in the valley.

With an uncannily prophetic eye to the future, the first wine he produced under the Gary Farrell label was a 1982 Pinot Noir sourced from what would eventually become two of the Russian River Valley’s premier vineyards: Rochioli and Allen. Planted just up the road from where he would build his winery, these sites are adjacent to each other on Westside Road and have been meticulously farmed by Joe Rochioli, Jr. for more than 40 years.

The success of our wines comes down to relationships like the one we enjoy with Joe and his family. We are committed to maintaining the strong, long-term partnerships we’ve established with the owners of the iconic Russian River Valley vineyards that form the heart of our wine portfolio, including Westside Farms, Rochioli, Allen, Stiling, Hallberg and more.

For the past few years, we have established new relationships with even more of our neighboring Russian River Valley growers. We’ve added exciting new vineyard sources to our portfolio including Ritchie, Bacigalupi, Pellegrini Olivet Lane Estate and Martinelli, to name just a few. Additionally, we continue to work with exceptional vineyard sites outside of the Russian River Valley to add intriguing counterpoints to our portfolio. These include newer sources like Durell Vineyard in Sonoma Valley, as well as long-standing sites such as Bradford Mountain in Dry Creek Valley and the classic Bien Nacido Vineyard of the Santa Maria Valley, both of which we have been working with for more than a decade.

When selecting new sites to work with, each vineyard is critically assessed for the specific climate conditions we require. In nearly every vineyard site we work with, cool breezes and fog from the nearby Pacific Ocean blanket the vines in the mornings and evenings during the growing season, tempering summer’s heat and reducing temperatures by 35-40 degrees at night, ensuring a long, even growing season. The slow ripening process that results fully matures the fruit while maintaining healthy levels of acidity. Here in the Russian River Valley, the wide range of volcanic, sandstone and alluvial soils is favorable for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, providing essential water drainage while retaining sufficient moisture and nutrients to nourish the vines during the appellation’s long growing season.

These specific conditions yield wines boasting bright, vibrant aromas, intense, yet supple flavors and exemplary balance. Our wines display these characteristics in spades, along with a remarkable purity and elegance of varietal expression.

Along with the heritage vineyards our reputation has been firmly built upon, these new vineyard sources give Winemaker Theresa Heredia an even broader palette of flavor and texture to work with in the winery.

Trip Advisor | June 1, 2015 | 5/5 Stars “A Must Visit”Outstanding location, outstanding vistas, outstanding wine, top notch staff. Mid-week is the time to go with zero crowds. The trip back down the mountain is a bonus. Yelp | May 31, 2015 | 5/5 Stars “Great Winery with Epic View”Great Winery with Epic View. Garret and I stopped by this winery during the week. They are normally strictly by appointment, however, since it was a weekday they were able to accommodate the two of us. Thank goodness. The chardonnays and pinot noir are incredible. They offer a small cheese plate that pairs well. For larger parties they have a private room. The tasting room has two great tables and a super neat bar that spans the entire amazing view. And the view... Wow. There is an incredible view of the Russian River Valley. If you have one winery to visit in the Russian River. Trip Advisor | April 12, 2015 | 5/5 Stars “Amazing customer service with your wine!”We had the tour and tasting on the terrace and it was amazing! Luckily our tour was small because we did the first one of the day and Tara was fantastic. She told us all kinds of interesting facts and was open to any questions. She gave us time to ourselves during the tasting, which was amazing and more than generous! We signed up for Grand Crew before we left and even received a handwritten note from Tara thanking us. One of the best tasting experiences ever. Trip Advisor | April 6, 2015 | 4/5 Stars “Great Pinot Noir”Had a fabulous wine tasting experience and tour of their facility. Beautiful setting as well. We went with friends from San Diego and they also enjoyed the wine. Very informative tour guide. Trip Advisor | April 6, 2015 | 4/5 Stars “Enjoyable Wine Tasting”We went to Gary Farrell for wine tasting on Easter afternoon as it was one of the wineries that was open. It is also a favorite of ours. We enjoyed tasting chardonnay and their very good pinot noir wine. They do a good job of describing where the grapes come from and show you on a map where the grapes are grown for the current bottle one is tasting. It was a very enjoyable tasting. There is a nice view from the tasting room of the redwoods and the drive up the driveway is pleasant. There is a lovely patio area outside (note - no picnics are allowed though). They do special events such as Table for 12 periodically. I also enjoyed seeing the cat sleeping by the fireplace. He's the winery tasting room cat. The tasting is currently priced at $15.00. They waive the tasting fee if one buys $100 or more in wine. We did a shared tasting. Yelp | February 27, 2015 | 5/5 Stars “Wow, such a wonderful experience!”Wow, such a wonderful experience! Yelp | August 21, 2014 | 5/5 Stars “Gary Farrell is always on my short list of wineries to visit in the Russian River Valley”Gary Farrell is always on my short list of wineries to visit in the Russian River Valley. Whether it's with my in-laws from Oregon or my friends from New York City, everyone is always impressed by the elegant setting and even more elegant wines. And now that the first vintages from new wine maker, Theresa Heredia, are ready to taste I will definitely be by for a visit again soon! Trip Advisor | August 19, 2014 | 5/5 Stars “Join the Wine Club - it's worth it”We have been wine club members for several years now. Our first visit here was on my 40th birthday from a recommendation from a wine steward at a local Oregon grocery store. Now we have been back several times. Our last trip was to the Harvest Dinner earlier this month. We enjoyed the wine, food and meeting the staff. Everyone was so very nice and accommodating. We will be back again and again. Thanks Kila, Stephanie, Andy, Nancy and Theresa. Trip Advisor | July 29, 2014 | 4/5 Stars “Great views and wine!”Great views, great wine and knowledgable and helpful staff.
