SITE DESCRIPTION
Planted in 2001. The vineyard has a morning fog that rises off the river and cools the vines, while sunny, warm days and breezy afternoons tend to heighten the intensity and complexity of the fruit flavor. OwnersMary and Joe Toboni are 4th generation San Franciscans whose roots can be traced back to San Francisco as early as the 1870s and specifically to Sonoma County prior to the 1920s. Every step of the way the Tobonis have made the ultimate effort by matching their soils and climate with optimal rootstock and clonal selections. Presently the Tobonis use a cover crop mix of perennial grasses which inhibits erosion and therefore holds all the nutrients and the minerals in the soils. The soils are loamy clay with some mineral and gravel composites.

SOILS
Goldridgefine sandy loam: soil provides excellent drainage and low soil fertility, maintaining low vigor
SITE DESCRIPTION
In the Green Valley sub-appellation of the Russian River Valley, this vineyard site enjoys refreshing daytime breezes and cool – but not cold – nighttime temperatures. The strongly marine-influenced climate means less severe temperature shifts from day to night – good for ripening because the vines never completely shut down. The high density vine spacing (1 x 2m) promotes excellent vine balance and development of grape flavors, structure and concentration.
FRUIT CHARACTER
Pinot Noir:
  • Deeper, darker color due to cool climate and production of more anthocyanins
  • Great structure from lots of fine, silky tannins (some tannin material is formed as the grape’s natural sunblock so cooler climates often produce finer, less aggressive tannins.)
  • Cool climate yields dark fruit flavors and aromas such as cassis and boysenberry as opposed to cherry and raspberry
  • Earthy characteristics also from cool climate. Hotter climates often yield more fruit-forward flavors and aromas while cooler climates instead create floral, earthy characteristics

Editors' Choice. #12 on Top 100 of 2015. "This might be one of the best values on the market, given the quality. Equal parts pretty and funky, it’s a tightly wound, savory, fruity wine that’s elegant and compelling. The tannins and oak are lightly imprinted around strawberry-rhubarb and fresh-cut rose, and the texture seductively silky. This is a delicious treat of a wine that should also age." – V.B., December 2015

Wellesley Wine Press
"Medium bodied with lively, potent aromatics and flavors. Classic California Pinot Noir notes. This is young and needs time, as there are some sharp edges at points. But after a night or two on the counter (simply recorked) those traits disipated and the wine held up brilliantly. Outsanding wine." – October 2015
