SITE DESCRIPTION
Planted in 2001. The vineyard has a morning fog that rises off the river and cools the vines, while sunny, warm days and breezy afternoons tend to heighten the intensity and complexity of the fruit flavor. OwnersMary and Joe Toboni are 4th generation San Franciscans whose roots can be traced back to San Francisco as early as the 1870s and specifically to Sonoma County prior to the 1920s. Every step of the way the Tobonis have made the ultimate effort by matching their soils and climate with optimal rootstock and clonal selections. Presently the Tobonis use a cover crop mix of perennial grasses which inhibits erosion and therefore holds all the nutrients and the minerals in the soils. The soils are loamy clay with some mineral and gravel composites.

SOILS
Goldridgefine sandy loam: soil provides excellent drainage and low soil fertility, maintaining low vigor
SITE DESCRIPTION
In the Green Valley sub-appellation of the Russian River Valley, this vineyard site enjoys refreshing daytime breezes and cool – but not cold – nighttime temperatures. The strongly marine-influenced climate means less severe temperature shifts from day to night – good for ripening because the vines never completely shut down. The high density vine spacing (1 x 2m) promotes excellent vine balance and development of grape flavors, structure and concentration.
FRUIT CHARACTER
Pinot Noir:
  • Deeper, darker color due to cool climate and production of more anthocyanins
  • Great structure from lots of fine, silky tannins (some tannin material is formed as the grape’s natural sunblock so cooler climates often produce finer, less aggressive tannins.)
  • Cool climate yields dark fruit flavors and aromas such as cassis and boysenberry as opposed to cherry and raspberry
  • Earthy characteristics also from cool climate. Hotter climates often yield more fruit-forward flavors and aromas while cooler climates instead create floral, earthy characteristics

RECENT REVIEWS Trip Advisor | April 12, 2015 | 5/5 Stars “Amazing customer service with your wine!”We had the tour and tasting on the terrace and it was amazing! Luckily our tour was small because we did the first one of the day and Tara was fantastic. She told us all kinds of interesting facts and was open to any questions. She gave us time to ourselves during the tasting, which was amazing and more than generous! We signed up for Grand Crew before we left and even received a handwritten note from Tara thanking us. One of the best tasting experiences ever. Trip Advisor | April 6, 2015 | 4/5 Stars “Great Pinot Noir”Had a fabulous wine tasting experience and tour of their facility. Beautiful setting as well. We went with friends from San Diego and they also enjoyed the wine. Very informative tour guide. Trip Advisor | April 6, 2015 | 4/5 Stars “Enjoyable Wine Tasting”We went to Gary Farrell for wine tasting on Easter afternoon as it was one of the wineries that was open. It is also a favorite of ours. We enjoyed tasting chardonnay and their very good pinot noir wine. They do a good job of describing where the grapes come from and show you on a map where the grapes are grown for the current bottle one is tasting. It was a very enjoyable tasting. There is a nice view from the tasting room of the redwoods and the drive up the driveway is pleasant. There is a lovely patio area outside (note - no picnics are allowed though). They do special events such as Table for 12 periodically. I also enjoyed seeing the cat sleeping by the fireplace. He's the winery tasting room cat. The tasting is currently priced at $15.00. They waive the tasting fee if one buys $100 or more in wine. We did a shared tasting. Yelp | February 27, 2015 | 5/5 Stars “Wow, such a wonderful experience!”Wow, such a wonderful experience! Fantastic Wines, Hospitality (Tara and Lisa) and View!!! This was the pinnacle or our Russian River Valley Winery outing!!! AND Dog Friendly, the pups enjoyed it too!!! Trip Advisor | February 6, 2015 | 5/5 Stars “Amazing View”The view from the tasting room and patio is really outstanding! The single vineyard pinot noirs and chardonnay are really good and they ship anywhere in the USA. Trip Advisor | December 1, 2014 | 5/5 Stars “A Perfect Day”My friends, family and I had a fantastic time. Wine was wonderful and Zack was so friendly and informative. Trip Advisor | November 12, 2014 | 5/5 Stars “Wine tasting with Randall”We loved the wine and the staff was very friendly. Joined the wine club. We tasted several wines. The view was spectacular. Trip Advisor | November 3, 2014 | 5/5 Stars “Beautiful views, Excellent Wines”Gary Farrell Winery is a beautiful place. Amazing hilltop view of the Russian River Valley from the inside tasting room, or the outdoor patio. Most importantly, the wine was really good. Would definitely go back next time I'm in the area. Yelp | August 21, 2014 | 5/5 Stars “Gary Farrell is always on my short list of wineries to visit in the Russian River Valley”Gary Farrell is always on my short list of wineries to visit in the Russian River Valley. Whether it's with my in-laws from Oregon or my friends from New York City, everyone is always impressed by the elegant setting and even more elegant wines. And now that the first vintages from new wine maker, Theresa Heredia, are ready to taste I will definitely be by for a visit again soon! Trip Advisor | August 19, 2014 | 5/5 Stars “Join the Wine Club - it's worth it”We have been wine club members for several years now. Our first visit here was on my 40th birthday from a recommendation from a wine steward at a local Oregon grocery store. Now we have been back several times. Our last trip was to the Harvest Dinner earlier this month. We enjoyed the wine, food and meeting the staff. Everyone was so very nice and accommodating. We will be back again and again. Thanks Kila, Stephanie, Andy, Nancy and Theresa. Trip Advisor | July 29, 2013 | 4/5 Stars “Great views and wine!”Great views, great wine and knowledgable and helpful staff. You can't beat sitting on the terrace with a good glass of wine. Yelp | July 8, 2014 | 5/5 Stars “Great views, nice people, great wine--who wouldn't be in!”Really enjoyed my recent "revisit" (for the third time) to Gary Farrell...Enjoyed our hostess Diana, who was quite fun and told us quite a bit about the wines we were trying...My buddy and I even purchased a couple of cookbook "holders"--for lack of a better word--which were made from wine barrels.. We were even convinced, after hearing about the scrumptious pork menu, to make a reservation for a future wine dinner on site...Great views, nice people, great wine--who wouldn't be "in!" Yelp | May 9, 2014 | 5/5 Stars “Wow Gary Farrell is wonderful”Wow Gary Farrell is wonderful. Their Pinots are delicious, the Zin was one if my favorites the last time we visited. My fiancé thought enough of the whole experience+the wine to join their wine club! The drive there is lovely and the views from the winery are stunning.
