2003 Cabernet Sauvignon - Sonoma County / Redwood Hill
GRAPE SOURCE
Redwood Hill is a beautiful ridge-top property owned by Patrick and Susan Coonan. This small vineyard was planted in 1990 in rocky red soils on terraced hills at an elevation of 1,500 feet in the northeastern foothills of Sonoma County’s Mayacamas Mountains.
WINEMAKING
Gary Farrell Winery has worked with the Coonan’s for a number of years and has watched the quality soar. This tiny, high elevation vineyard is above the fog level, and enjoys the cool evening air that slows maturation. Mountain vineyards are known for tremendous acid retention, smaller clusters and low yields, resulting in intense, balanced and well-extracted fruit. While the goal with this wine was never to obtain excessive ripeness and extract, it maintains focused fruit and is food friendly in nature. This wine was held in the finest French oak barrels (40% new and the remainder one and two years old) for 17 months before bottling, then bottle-aged for over two years prior to release. Crafted in a style which will evolve gracefully for many years, this wine will appeal to fans of Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon.
